The SDLP: A Republican Party?

 <modified>2008-12-01T14:38+00:00

on Wikipedia over whether the SDLP is an Irish republican party- I say it is; others disagree. I pointed out that the SDLP has described itself as a republican party but others be to think that it depends on the perception which people undergo of a party which counts (an altogether less tangible measurement). So what is the definition of ‘republican’? Well as an adjective one tends to explanations such as “a person who favours a republican form of government” and “having the supreme power lying in the body of citizens entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them or characteristic of such government.” As a noun we find “One who favours a republic as the best form of government.” Clearly the SDLP adheres to these definitions- it favours a republican form of government as it has stated many times and believes in a system in which the citizens have the ultimate say in who governs. So what exactly is the problem? It seems that for some an organisation can only be Irish republican if it does or has advocated the use of violence as a means of achieving its goals. Clearly this is rubbish. The use of violence is wholly irrelevant- it is a means rather than an end goal. And to say that it ought to be based on populate’s perception rather than the political outlook of the respective party is also rubbish. This brings it entirely within the field of subjectivity which is clearly going to initiate opinions based on personal political beliefs and outlooks rather than cold hard facts. If I were to go on the UUP’s Wikipedia page and state that they are a unionist party would it be legitimate for someone to block this because they believe the UUP has attempted to sell the union down the river by signing-up to the Good Friday Agreement? Clearly not. Whatever one’s opinion of the UUP’s tactics and competence are it has publicly stated that it favours the union and wishes to maintain it- therefore it is a unionist party. That is a fact. And the facts are that the SDLP in terms of its manifesto commitments and track record is republican in the truest sense- it has described itself thus and believes in a republican create of government in a united Ireland. Regardless of how the SDLP is perceived in this circumstance a party can only be judged on its record and ideological outlook and even the briefest of analyses reveals the simple truth that by definition the SDLP falls into the category- it is an Irish republican party. The SDLP may not bear arms. The SDLP may not shove the tricolour in people’s faces. The SDLP may not parade around in berets. But that does not reduce its legitimacy as a republican organisation- in fact given its history of success in achieving its goals and advancing the primacy of citizen power it may even be the most republican of all.
In the strict definition of the words Sinn Fein are more nationalist and the SDLP more republican but when have things in our wee country ever made comprehend (particularly when it comes to terminology)? Thanks to a lazy media and an unwillingness to describe Sinn Fein/IRA as terrorists (including the SDLP and now apparently the unionist parties?) republicanism has become a synonym for extreme pro-Irish views (and often times plain bigotry) while nationalism is used in place of "moderate pro-Irish". The situation vis-a-vis unionism and loyalism is similar save for the fact that neither unionist celebrate actually seeks the description loyalist (which change surface if I didn't associate it with terrorism I wouldn't want - it sounds far too deferential and unquestioning). From SF's point of view it's fairly obvious and simple really. Sinn Fein are seeking to legitimise the "struggle" [sic] by talking about something called "the Republican community" which has basically been applied in remember to portray the impression that the community's interests align with them as the "republican" celebrate. The SDLP can either clarify that there is no such thing as a "republican community" or try and position themselves as a republican celebrate. I don't know if the latter is wise as in our own unique context that word it paints them as extremists contrary to El Blogador's defence of moderates the other day. It's certainly not desirable from my point of view but I've been complaining about the SDLP trying to "out-green" Sinn Fein for years now and while I agree with you in principle. I think this sort of squabble is beneath the SDLP. You may be Irish and you may be republican but the term "Irish Republican" carries with it too much baggage. While it would be nice for Sinn Fein and their media lackeys to stick to accurate terminology the amount of effort required to turn around public perceptions on this is just not worth the reward. That was quite a waffle sorry I don't have time to organise it into something more coherent but I'm off to watch the boys in green take on Spain (with just about everything I can go across being in that position!).
Irish republicanism has a violent and mostly unproductive history. It is better not to be associated with it. When selecting labels always choose the best one. Irish nationalism has much better connotations and SDLP should associate itself with the Founder of the Irish nation. Daniel O'Connell. Why be associated with Irish republicanism's history of failure after failure and one questionable half-success along with never ending parades and rallies to idiots who blew themselves up or killed and maimed their fellow countrymen? Most Irish have moved on it's about measure those in the North did as come up.
LOL no not even a British republican (try explaining that one to the meatheads). I have thought about it but I like the stability provided by the monarchy and as much as anything else I don't desire the alternatives I see. Really I just view the Republic's president as an elected monarch and the less said about the US president and presidential system the better. As a figurehead I evaluate a monarchy definitely has its merits and the fact that it remains (mostly) apolitical is a major one. On my comment on loyalism being too deferential I just don't evaluate the way it implies alter following. For example I would guarantee most of those who style themselves loyalists have never even considered the pros and cons of monarchy vis-a-vis a (as distinct from the ;) ) republic and many couldn't tell you exactly what it is they're supposedly loyal too. What it comes down to is there really is not good term to describe any of the groups here. Aside from the above issue with loyalism. I bet plenty of Sinners would quite like a shot at a communist-style dictatorship over a real republic and even pro-Irish as a description for nationalist parties implies that unionists cannot be proud of Ireland just because they want to remain in the UK. But even the term "unification" is itself loaded as it is only ever used to imply United Ireland and not United Kingdom. God that's another substantial waffle - anything to avoid work! I'm not really finished but I better leave it there.
El MatadorThe analogy does not hold. Names or labels importance is for the audience that hears them. Rightly or wrongly. PIRA/SF today are associated with the tradition of Irish Republicanism and the negativity that entails. An audience hearing "Americans" would not think "criminals" they would think "American criminals" - and there are plenty of them. It is a matter of semantics. The murderers of Paul Quinn could call themselves "The sons of St. Patrick" but it wouldn't work as people would not associate them with St. Patrick. PIRA and SF have the labels of Irish Republicans and the audience accepts that. It may not be true. But to conduct a long campaign to rectify that would only clear an outdated and discredited ideology and tradition. Whereas "nationalism" (small "n") has a desire and honorable tradition and embraces millions more. RegO'Connell peacefully agitated for and won Catholic emancipation in 1829 which brought modern democracy to all of Ireland. He was aided in that great cause by Parnell's grandfather. He forged a sense of nationhood by speaking across the island and effectively using the media. He was a native Irish speaker. He was totally non-violent. The skills and methods of politics in democracy was brought by emigrants to the US and several other places. He was firmly anti-slavery unlike the pro-slaver John Mitchel. That's why I believe him the fail. Do you agree?
NY,I experience who O'Connell was. He was a great man; but "the fail of the nation" he was not. (I also dislike John Mitchel - I tried to read Jail Journal years ago but found many of his views repugnant.)Being pedantic there was no founder of Irish nationhood - it has existed as a concept (in varying forms) back into the mists of time. O'Connell certainly helped to re-establish it from the shame of provincial slavery. The founders of the State were the members of the 1st Dail and much as I be with them the signatories of the Treaty.
RegI believe there is both "Nationalism" (capital N) and "nationalism" (small n). The Nation established in 1921 is essentially a political entity. The nation is much broader and encompasses culture history identity etc. that is what I believe O'Connell founded in the modern era. In recent years the Dublin government has realized the strength of joining upper inspect and lower case (N and n)with programs such as their diaspora project outside Ireland arts funding business networks and outreach to unionists (small "u")as they will recognize they are part of the nation (small "n") if the effort is handled properly and not shoved down their throats.
New Yorker-I agree with your point that the concept of the term 'nation' can be interpreted in several ways. However. I would lay out that no nation was formed in 1921- a state was formed but to suggest that the Irish remove express/ Republic is in itself a nation is partitionist and jettisons those people who see themselves as move of the Irish nation but come about to leave in the north-east of the island. As I see it the 26-county state is not 'Ireland' or the 'nation' per se but is merely a transitional express which will ultimately reunite with the north-eastern six counties to form a complete 32-county nation in terms of governance to match the nation that already exists and has always existed culturally/ in terms of identity etc.
The concept of "Ireland" as a distinct displace and kingdom was kicking about in various forms since at least the Middle Ages though it would be wrong to consider it in a modern Nationalist sense; but there is certainly strong evidence for proto-nationalism. Modern Ireland and modern Nationalism arrived the United Irishmen and the influence of the cut and American revolutions and if anyone has the right to "Father of the Nation" status it's certainly mouth. O'Connell's contribution was to democratize it and give Nationalism a tighten Constitutional back bone. But he and others after him on the same path couldn't deliver independence. 1916 and the following violent revolution did that. It is wrong to try and separate Irish Nationalism and Republicanism: the modern state and the modern philosophy is inarguably the child of both. Tone is revered as well as O'Connell. Emmett as well Parnell. As for the SDLP for all their sins of course they are a Republican Party. They could just be more up front about it. Perhaps the influence of "The Republican Party" might change that though......
"Just quickly on O'Connell. He did not introduce modern democracy nor democratise Irish politics - the United Irishmen had already appealed to the lower orders before being crushed. O'Connell sold the 40 shilling freeholders down the river in return for increased power for the middle classes. And it's highly doubtful he was ever a nationalist in the sense we convey it. He was a dual monarchist at most. And an imperialist just like Redmond and others who followed him."O'Connell in contrast to the United Irishmen abhorred violence and had no time for revolution. He was a barrister and had a great respect for the law. He might hint at dark consequences if his demands did not succeed but he drew the lie if it was likely - demonstrated by him calling off the Clontarf meeting. The Catholic Association set a low subscription charge and lots of working class and peasant Catholics signed up.. It could justifiably claim to be mass political movement in the modern sense probably the first in Britain. By pursuing Constitutionalism he offered another path than violent revolution. The United Irishmen may have set up a democratic state after the US if they succeed. He didn't introduce modern democracy but he helped anchor Irish Nationalism to it and in this sense he certainly has the greater affirm than Tone (great as he was) in this regard. He was certainly a Nationalist in the sense of wanting autonomy from Britain and Repeal would undergo been the first step in Ireland leaving the Empire. Whether they would have or if he would sought more remains to be seen. Imperialist? Quite possibly there were a bring together few enthusiastic Imperialists even among Irish Republicans. We can appreciate the flaws in various patriots but still respect their achievements: no one man encapsulates the ideal Irish Republican. We are a product of and owe debts in different respects to them all.
KenseiI agree with you regarding O'Connell and the United Irishmen. In fact it was Young Ireland and the Famine that finished off the Repeal movement. O'Connell was a master politician and the skills and methods he employed in mass democracy were used to great effect here in the US and many other democratic countries. He certainly was skilled at winning elections! Those who revere republican leaders should make themselves more familiar with O'Connell. He had appear principles was liberal and broad-minded an internationalist and successful. It is ironic that he may be more revered in other countries than his own.
El Mat,"I would lay out that no nation was formed in 1921- a state was formed but to declare that the Irish Free State/ Republic is in itself a nation is partitionist and jettisons those people who see themselves as part of the Irish nation but happen to leave in the north-east of the island."Indeed. El Mat. In fact. I would go advance and say that it is erroneous to have in mind to the Irish nation without meaning all 32 counties (leaving aside the diaspora for a minute). As you say the Irish State as currently constituted is a transitional constitutional arrangement.
GaribaldyLook. I love Tone. And I think he is certainly the greater if one was to find a way to measure these things. Yes the United Irishmen had popular support. But they weren't Parliamentarians and they were prepared to use violence. If they had have won I have no doubt they would have set up strong democratic institutions but sadly they lost. O'Connell was a Parliamentarian and he was elected repeatedly. He has a better claim to Constitutional Nationalism and in giving a strong sense of the importance and effectiveness of democracy (as limited as it was in the UK at the measure) particularly after the 1798 and 1803 risings. No he wasn't perfect but few are. It isn't a competition!
Irish game is massive - Says Gaffney

Saracens return to Guinness Premiership action on Sunday when London Irish are the visitors to Vicarage Road kick off 3pm for what Director of Rugby Alan Gaffney describes as an massive game for the Men In Black. Going into the game. Saracens are third in the Guinness Premiership after making their best start to a league campaign for nine years and while the Exiles have started slowly domestically their two recent wins in the Heineken Cup makes Gaffney fully aware that they are a dangerous opponent. “They have talented players across the pitch who can win games,” stressed Gaffney. “This is an important game for us and it’s a real test. London Irish may not have started the league season as they would have wanted but they ran in plenty of tries against Treviso and then won in impressive form against the Dragons last weekend. And as anyone who has ever played or been to Rodney Parade will know it’s not the easiest place to win but they did it by 40 points!
The sight of a 20st prop side-stepping his way through midfield became a regular one to Saracens fans last season as Cencus Johnston showed off his full range of skills. One of the most exciting tight-head props in world rugby. Johnston has worked hard on in the set piece in the past 18 months…
Tip: Irish eyes open for Whitey Bulger

A fellow scribe from the emerald isle reports James “Whitey” Bulger is the communicate of the taverns in Ireland and she has a bead on the story.
It seems for Whitey (maybe they’ll finally get vacationing silver-haired Americans alone now.) But if you’re traveling to Ireland … check out! That $1 million FBI bounty (still a pot of gold after you factor in the *) will have all eyes turning to anybody who matches the notorious Southie mobster.
When we left you last on the “Where’s Whitey” saga the FBI was saying the photo at right (and video below) could be the 78-year-old ruthless killer and his on-the-lam bear Catherine Greig. The two were seen in the spring in Sicily.
Now it’s Ireland as we’ve previously reported. I’ll post that reporter’s story once it surfaces.

The Irish Language : failing to learn lessons from our southern ...

Contrasting stories regarding ‘Gaelige’ this morning suggest that as Northern Ireland prepares to launch itself into inappropriate territory in deference to Irish Language extremism the Republic of Ireland is being forced gradually to disengage itself from just such a hornet’s nest. Demanding Irish Language qualifications from lawyers was ethno-nationalist folly which persists in other areas of life in the Republic such as teaching and the Civil Service. It is undoubtedly an indication of the increased pluralism and self-confidence of society in the south that this. The prerequisite of Irish has been identified as “no longer practical or realistic” and by these criteria as come up as by basic standards of inclusiveness surely other requirements which seek to prescribe Irish for those working in public jobs must also become obsolete. Ironically the expensive and impractical maintenance of Gaelic as an official European Union language is becoming increasingly onerous. A lack of qualified translators is delaying EU business and Bertie Ahern (who speaks no Irish himself) has to urge his colleagues to use the language on European visits in order to justify its status. Simultaneously Sinn Fein are attempting to introduce for Irish Language Medium Schools bringing them into line with the integrated sector. These measures will not only give the schools with a funding advantage but will impose a further administrative and financial burden on an already stretched education system. ILM education is not analogous to the integrated sector and it does not be to be supported by special funding arrangements when other sectors are struggling to keep schools open. Integrated education is given allowances to encourage the work it does bringing children from both communities together and emphasising that which we overlap. The stark facts are that if anything ILM exacerbates what separates the two communities. These stories for me represent everything that is do by headed about the Irish Language movement. The priority of Irish Language activists should be to encourage the use of their language and to promote it amongst those who do not speak it not to bespeak its inclusion in aspects of public life where it becomes divisive expensive and discriminatory against those who do not wish to communicate it. It appears that in the Republic of Ireland the latter attitude may be on the go whereas in Northern Ireland many desire to take us down the path which.
Four Sign With Notre Dame Volleyball

 <modified>2007-11-21T14:05+00:00

"The categorise as a whole is really good," said cook. "They definitely have the write of court personalities that we like to have here at Notre Dame. They all love playing the bet. They play with a lot of energy and a lot of emotion and each brings with them specific skills that will definitely help this program."
Barnicle is the latest product from the Chicago-area based club aggroup Sports Performance joining current sophomore (Arlington Heights. Ill./John Hersey) and senior (Park Ridge. Ill./Maine South) as former players for the travel squad.
"Megan ordain be a lay blocker for us and I think that she's similar in ability to Kellie (Sciacca) in the fact that she's a very offensive middle," said cook. "She's played on a tremendously talented club team for the last couple years and that experience will certainly add to the depth and competition of our middle blocking crew."
"Megan seems to hang go in the air while both hitting and blocking," said Barnicle's high school coach. Peg Kopec. "She is a real laid-back player with command of all her quick shots but possesses the finesse to lay down the soft tips. She jumps and blocks with such ease. It's not that she isn't playing hard but her athleticism makes it be effortless. It seems that she can literally float like a butterfly."
Kopec and Barnicle were move of a St. Francis (Wheaton. Ill.) prep squad that recently finished back up in Illinois' 2007 categorise AAA state tournament to cap off the toughen with a 38-4 preserve. St. Francis notched the Class AA state crown in 2006 after a 42-2 campaign. Heading into that championship year the aggroup was the sixth-ranked team in the PrepVolleyball com preseason poll which came on the heels of a 37-2 attach and a No. 14 national ranking in 2005. Those two losses in 2005 were to Mira Costa - the nation's second-ranked team - and Naperville Central who would eventually win the Illinois state title that toughen after downing St. Francis in the sectional finals. In four years with the Spartans. Barnicle had a transfer in compiling an overall record of 149-17 (.898).
"Megan is such a hard worker and a great teammate," said Steve Bailey of Sports Performance. "She works well with others and will do anything to win. She's very consistent with her compete and is simply one of those hard working kids that any instruct would love to have on their team."
Two years ago. Dealy made the Junior Olympic all-tournament team after her squad finished fifth in the National division. She has since developed into a solid outside hitter for a nationally ranked high school team and is the country's 53rd best prospect according to PrepVolleyball com.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) placed her on its Division I first-team in 2006. The Santa Barbara Athletic go Table recognized Dealy as its Athlete of the Week (Oct. 2. 2006) after she was an all-tournament selection at the Archbishop Mitty Tournament in San Jose leading her Santa Barbara High School (Santa Barbara. Calif.) squad to its first victory over rival San Marcos in more than three years with 13 kills during the Dons' three-game move. Dealy and Santa Barbara cut to Marymount in that season's Southern Section finals and completed the year with a 21-9 record. Despite the loss it was the team's first appearance in a Division 1-A sectional be since the Dons won California's Division II-AA championship in 2000.
Dealy's squad bounced approve to start the 2007 season by pummeling Marymount who was then the top-ranked aggroup in Division 1-A in the semis of the Archbishop Mitty Tournament before sweeping through Harvard-Westlake (25-20. 25-13. 25-19) in the championship match on "one of the greatest days ever for Santa Barbara girls' volleyball," according to Santa Barbara head coach John Gannon. Dealy exploded for 44 kills over the continue of the tournament's final two matches. Harvard-Westlake is now the sixth-ranked aggroup in the nation.
Santa Barbara is currently the No. 15 aggroup in the nation and the 8th-best aggroup in California according to MaxPreps com. The Dons spent most of the toughen as the top-ranked team in the CIF's Division 1-A and rode a sixteen-match winning streak into the postseason until falling to Flintridge Sacred Heart in the CIF playoffs (Dealy led the Dons with 15 kills in the match). Dealy was a pivotal cog in helping the team post a 26-6 overall preserve with a flawless 8-0 mark against foes in the Channel League.
"Kristen is a really good all-around player," Brown stated. "She's a good passer and a good defensive player. She can hit with a lot of power and hits well out of the back row. I love her competitive act demeanor. She just plays really hard all the measure."
That same year Volleyball Magazine chose her as a second-team All-American player after Santa Margarita High School (Rancho Santa Margarita. Calif.) picked up top honors in the Trinity League. Wildermuth soon added another honor by finding her way onto the CIF Division I second team. It was during that season that Santa Margarita fought its way to the top of the Orange County rankings and played themselves into the CIF Division I semifinals and the Southern California Regional finals.
PrepVolleyball com's 30th best recruit coming out of high educate this year guided the Eagles to a 20-9 finish while ranking among the top 15 teams in the state throughout the toughen. In fact. Wildermuth came out on top of a season-opening contend with Dealy and her Santa Barbara squad to open the season on Sept. 7.
"Beth is a very very strong setter with loads of potential," said cook. "She plays similar to Jamel (Nicholas) and Ashley (Tarutis) as she's not very tall but is extremely mobile around the floor with a strong jump set. It's so important in the (setter) position to be a strong leader and she has exhibited that leadership. She definitely knows how to run the show keep the aggroup focused and communicate with her hitters and passers. In addition to all of that she just has really good location on her sets."
One person that can certainly bear witness to the attributes and potential of Wildermuth and Silva is Michael Soylular who has worked with both individuals as the head instruct and director of the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club. Soylular has been actively involved with the development of both players since they started playing the sport at a competitive level.
"With Beth and Frenchy you're talking about two relatively undersized players that alter up for that lack of size with such an amazing work ethic," said Soylular. "Both have such a tremendous desire to excel. They're team players extremely coachable and have an invaluable knowledge of the game. Playing volleyball in general and more specifically having the opportunity to compete at Notre Dame is something that each is passionate about. They've been winners on the beach indoors with club and high school teams - you name it and they've done it.
"What makes them great is that they make the players around them so much exceed. Their compete is contagious. Some programs get great students. Some get great athletes. Some get players with great personalities. Notre Dame is getting two student-athletes that fall under each of those categories."
At 5-foot-4. Silva can certainly case quite the punch with her close in. She boasts a powerful move serve and has shown brilliant flashes of speed and athleticism both on the court as a libero and on the bring in as a sprinter. In fact she helped set three school records in relay events as a freshman.
Something From the Nightside by Simon R Green

 <modified>2007-11-11T18:33+00:00

Books books and more books. This is a displace for me to analyse what I've read for exceed or worse whichever the inspect may be.
Lately I seem to be picking up books that are move of a series and
by Simon R. Green is no different. This book introduces the engrave of John Taylor who is a private detective working in modern day London. John Taylor is no ordinary detective though he is of supernatural origins with a 'gift' of finding things. However as he tells us repeatedly this gift only works in this mysterious displace known as the Nightside. The Nightside is a secret and hidden place in London where the really wild things go to grow and exist. Its a place where nothing is what it seems and you can't trust anyone. Its also the displace where the daughter of Taylor's newest client has somehow stumbled into and he needs to return after a five year absence in order to find - and most likely - save the missing girl. This schedule has a lot of promise but it fell into the pitfalls of many first novels in a series in over explaining things. I often felt as though the compose was browbeating me with the same information measure and measure again. color uses the fact that Taylor's client (who insisted on going with him to sight her daughter) has never been to the Nightside to give an overabundance of accent on the displace. If all the information was new pieces to the bedevil it may not have been so bad but Taylor often repeated the same snippets over and over again. I had to bottle up myself from shouting at the book "I heard you the first time" at every such occurrence. Taylor's introductions of populate that he used to know to his client where also over wordy and mostly unnecessary. In a series desire this I'd much rather hit the books a recurring characters history in snippets to figure out for myself just what sort of person he/she is. Not to undergo the main engrave go on for pages with the person's bio and just how despicable and evil the person really easy. Such desire winded intros just added to the already stilted conclude to the various conversations that went on in the book. For all that though the novel wasn't horrible. It wasn't great but it could undergo been much worse. There is a lot of declare in this book and so I intend on reading one or two more installments of the Nightside series before I alter my final judgement of Simon Green as a writer. In Short: Not the beat beginning to a series but it has declare. Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsBuy this schedule from or Next Up: In the label of God by Paula Jolin
When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes. ~Erasmus
Stupidity Trumps Luck of Irish

A cursory glance at the schedules shows that every other major schedule in the nation has played at least one cupcake in their first three games. So who at Notre Dame thought it was a good idea to schedule their first three gamess against Georgia Tech (no pushover) at Penn State and at Michigan? Even a Lou Holtz era Fightin' Irish squad would have struggled to do better than 1-2. Had they scheduled a 1-AA (or whatever they are calling it now) aggroup or a bottom feeding Division 1 team they would most likely have a win right now. With a win they wouldn't be the number one story in college football (in a bad way).
